Mr Banks Has A Mental Breakdown is the first of a series of group exhibitions, spanning a great range of
different media. Each successive exhibition is specifically curated to explore the various concerns of the
ongoing project Reality Hype.
Using semiotics and postmodern philosophy as a departure point, Reality Hype seeks to uncover new points
of reference. The inability of consciousness to distinguish reality from a simulation of reality is the basis for
the project’s investigations.
In the context of the current exhibition, it is explored through the works of a selected group of artists, diverse in
expression, but whose works touch on similar subjects. Appropriation of already existing material, fragmentation,
simulation and/or copying of nature and body, collage and illusionism are ideas running throughout the show.
Taking its cue from a Youtube video, the exhibition seeks to instil a feeling of irreverence and an absence of
distinction between high and low culture. The show at DIG’s raw and spacious venue will incorporate pieces based
on the themes of human-becoming-animal, a boxing match, Victorian bravado, neo-surrealist collage, site-specific
installations mixed with video projections. The second floor of the venue will be bristling with happenings in the form
of, amongst other things, a dinner, a masquerade and a magician’s performance.
The exhibition is curated by Adam Fenton and David Dellagi, in collaboration with DIG.
