Reality Hype – Phase II: The Hitchhiker’s Guide To Reality

A group exhibition featuring Julieta Aguinaco, Oscar Berglund, Anders Brinch, Odey Curbelo,
Rasmus Damgaard, David Dellagi, Mikkel Olaf Eskildsen, Adam Fenton, Chris Gray,
Katherine Midgley, Claus Hugo Nielsen

The Hitchhiker’s Guide To Reality is the second exhibition of the ongoing project Reality Hype and
a follow-up to last year's show, Mr Banks Has A Mental Breakdown, which took place in London.
This time around, Reality Hype goes to Denmark.

The project Reality Hype explores ideas relating to Postmodern philosophy and Post-structuralism.
For the current show, the project turns its attention to hyperreality. For The Hitchhiker’s Guide To
Reality, the boundaries between reality and representations of reality are blurred. Each artist in the
show operates within his or her own reality and these differing worlds are freely allowed to overlap
and interact in the context of the exhibition.

The selected artists are from the UK, Denmark, Sweden, Mexico and Cuba. The exhibition
incorporates expressive paintings and biomorphic plaster sculptures, Victorian inspired landscape painting,
drawings depicting parallel mental universes, horror-inspired video and neo-surrealism.

The venue for the exhibition is the beautiful, atmospheric and spacious Sct Hans Chapel,
historically a part of the renowned Sct Hans Hospital’s psychiatric center in Roskilde. The Hitchhiker’s Guide
To Reality is curated by David Dellagi and Adam Fenton in cooperation with Jeppe Kruse.

The exhibition is supported by CPH AIR.

Mr Banks Has A Mental Breakdown is the first of a series of group exhibitions, spanning a great range of
different media. Each successive exhibition is specifically curated to explore the various concerns of the
ongoing project Reality Hype.

Using semiotics and postmodern philosophy as a departure point, Reality Hype seeks to uncover new points
of reference. The inability of consciousness to distinguish reality from a simulation of reality is the basis for
the project’s investigations.

In the context of the current exhibition, it is explored through the works of a selected group of artists, diverse in
expression, but whose works touch on similar subjects. Appropriation of already existing material, fragmentation,
simulation and/or copying of nature and body, collage and illusionism are ideas running throughout the show.

Taking its cue from a Youtube video, the exhibition seeks to instil a feeling of irreverence and an absence of
distinction between high and low culture. The show at DIG’s raw and spacious venue will incorporate pieces based
on the themes of human-becoming-animal, a boxing match, Victorian bravado, neo-surrealist collage, site-specific
installations mixed with video projections. The second floor of the venue will be bristling with happenings in the form
of, amongst other things, a dinner, a masquerade and a magician’s performance.

The exhibition is curated by Adam Fenton and David Dellagi, in collaboration with DIG.
